Ludhiana, December 14

Some teachers of government schools, who are retired, are on extension or were transferred, have received letters for duty during the gram panchayat elections. However, they are making rounds of the offices concerned to get their duties removed.

Balwinder Kaur, a social science teacher, who retired last year from Government High School, Dharour, received a letter for duty in elections. Similarly, Surinder Kaur, a Punjabi teacher, from the same school is on service extension since May 31 and has been assigned the duty. Those who are on extension are only given salary without any other benefits and they cannot be assigned any such duty.

Principal of the school has written to the District Election Officer in the extension case and asked for exempting Surinder Kaur from duty because “since she is not on regular rolls with the department, if anything happens to the teacher on duty, who will be responsible?” Similarly, another employee from the government department who has been transferred to Amritsar has received the letter for duty in Ludhiana.

Senior officials from the administration said the lists were computer generated and that was the reason behind such problems. All such cases would be adjusted, he said.
