Jagraon, August 17

The Jagraon police have formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to crack the carjacking incident which took place on the night of August 1.

The team would be led by SP (D) Pirthipal Singh, while DSP (D) Sarabjit Singh and Nishan Singh, In-charge of the Jagraon CIA staff, are the other members.

Some unidentified persons had taken away a Toyota Fortuner from outside a marriage palace on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway at gunpoint. The carjackers had also kidnapped car driver Balraj Singh, but had asked him to get off the car near Chooharchak village on the highway. They had also taken away the wallet and mobile phone of the driver.

Following the incident, the police had registered a case against the unidentified persons. The incident took place despite tight security arrangements made by the police in the wake of Independence Day.

The SUV belonged to Ludhiana-based businessman Saurav Jain, who had come to attend a wedding at a marriage palace near Mullanpur Dakha on August 1. The police were suspecting the involvement of the driver in the incident, as he was left unhurt by carjackers.

Jagraon SSP Surjit Singh said the police had formed a SIT to crack the case. “The police have been investigating the case from various angles and it will be cracked very soon,” he said.
