Ludhiana, August 3
Ludhiana swimmers bagged two gold medals besides securing the second and third positions in other events, whereas five new meet records were established on the opening day of the 42nd edition of the Senior Punjab State Swimming Championship-2019 for Men and Women being held at the War Heroes Stadium Swimming Pool, Sangrur, on Saturday.
City swimmers won top honours in the team event (4 x 200-metre free relay for men) and Anmol Jindal clinched a gold medal in an individual event (400-metre individual medley for men).
Meanwhile, five meet records were reset on Saturday, two each by hosts Sangrur and Mohali districts, while Ferozepur rewrote one record.
In the women’s 200-metre backstroke, Arshpreet Kaur from Mohali created a new record. She clocked 02.45:24 seconds to put to shade the existing record of 02.45:28 seconds set by Gurbinder Kaur of Hoshiarpur in 2007.
Chahat Arora, also from Mohali, rewrote a meet record in 200-metre breaststroke event, when she took 02:56.49 seconds to establish a new record. The earlier record of 03:07.24 seconds was established in 2005 by Mankiran Kaur of Sangrur.
Similarly, hosts Sangrur district created two meet records. Both these records were set by Deepali Attri.
In the 50-metre freestyle, Deepali took 0:28.92 seconds to eclipse the old record of 00:30.15 seconds set by her last year. She again improved upon her record in the 50-metre backstroke event, wherein she clocked 00:33.19 second to erase her record of 00.35:10 seconds, wrote in the last edition of this championship.
In the 200-metre butterfly stroke event, Anshav Jindal of Ferozepur rewrote his own record. He clocked 02.22:25 seconds to create a new record. Last year, he had set a record with 2.22:65 seconds.
Vijay Inder Singla, Punjab Cabinet Minister for PWD and Education, declared the championship open, in which around 200 swimmers drawn from 12 districts in addition to the Punjab Police were vying for top honours.
He promised to get the pool at Sangrur, indoor and all-weather. He congratulated the swimmers from Punjab, who won positions in the National Aquatic Championship last year. The Minister lauded the Punjab Swimming Association for providing the best available facilities to its swimmers. He also gave away prizes to some of the position holders.

Women: 200-m breaststroke: 1st Chahat Arora of Mohali, 2nd Gurnoor Kaur of Jalandhar and 3rd Vanshika of Mohali
Men: 4 x200-m free relay: 1st Sangrur, 2nd Punjab Police and 3rd Jalandhar.
