Young students from the city have come up with a solution to save water being used for watering plants and irrigation.

In a recent Tinkering Marathon conducted at Atal Tinkering Lab at Bharitya Vidya Mandir, Udham Singh Nagar, students have come up with a model that not only helps in saving water, but also in proper crop growth by maintaining the optimum water levels to prevent the soil from drying out.

The system has a sensor that measures moisture content in soil. If the content is low, the system supplies water and if it reaches the optimum level, it stops the water supply automatically thereby maintaining the requisite moisture level in the soil without having to manually check and water plants.

“The system works perfectly to prevent wastage of water,” said Shiv Kumar, a Class X student at the school. Chirayu, another student, said it was a good system that makes watering plants. “If you are out of town for a few days, you need not worry. The level of moisture or water content can be pre-set according to requirement,” he said.

Another student said this model could also be applied to the crop irrigation system. “This can be connected with the drip irrigation system and can go a long way in saving the excessive flow of water in the fields,” said another student.

Principal Bandana Sethi said the young minds need encouragement and facilities and they can come up with innovative solutions and invent new things for the progress of the society.
