Social groups become active after six months

Society is once again buzzing with activities after hibernation of various organisations, indulging in social service, for over six months.

Busy schedule of members of almost all sections of society during and following demonetisation and conclusion of the financial year were cited as major reasons behind the long vacation of philanthropists.

Interacting with Ludhiana Tribune after addressing a meeting of senior functionaries of the Rotary Club, district governor Sanjay Gupta said a majority of over 70 clubs of his district had resumed social service projects recently after a gap of around six months.

“Though some units were somehow managing to organise social service projects during and after the demonetisation process, a majority of active volunteers did not exhibit full enthusiasm,” said Gupta while maintaining that a large number of clubs had scheduled their events in June, besides ensuing fortnight of May.

Airing similar views, chairman of the Literacy Mission of RID 3090, Amjad Ali, said a majority of executive members of the mission could not devote desired time for various events related to promotion of literacy for obvious reason of their preoccupied schedule during the last six months.

“While entrepreneurs remained busy in managing their accounts due to demonetisation of specified bank notes and completing formalities of the closing financial year, officials of government and private organisations had to work overtime during these months,” said Ali.

President, Lions Club, Inderpal Singh Walia, and patron, Social Welfare Organisation, Tarsem Garg, said they had rescheduled programmes related to social welfare according to convenience and availability of active members of their organisations.

Meanwhile, Rotarians of the region vowed to put in extra efforts during following weeks so that targets of the year were completed according to expectations of senior functionaries in the organisation and beneficiaries.

They also announced to contribute liberally towards Rotary Foundation Funds by enrolling themselves as Paul Harris Fellow (PHF).

The district governor, Sanjay Gupta, and the assistant district governor, Rajnish Gupta, felicitated office-bearers of the local unit for their outstanding performance in the field of social service. The district heads announced to acknowledge local leaders during annual award function for their contribution in fight against social evils, including drug addiction, sickness, gender bias and illiteracy.
