In the wake of increasing number of rapes in the city, self-defence training for women has become the need of the hour. Taking a step in this regard, the city colleges have started training classes for girls.

The efforts being taken by colleges across the city are appreciable as it will help women protect themselves if any such situation arises.

Government College for Girls Principal Sharanjeet Kaur remarked said they were undertaking several initiatives for teaching girls the techniques of self-defence and also conducting various seminars and workshops.

“We have even made a women safety cell, gender champion club for the women empowerment. During various seminars, we guide students about self-defence. Karate classes are being organised for girls,” said she.

Khalsa College for Women Principal Mukti Gill said the college provides students with daily sessions on self-defence and the sports department was making huge efforts to help girls become bold. Self-defence classes in the college are open for all and not only for the sports section.

Prabhdeep Kaur, a student, said: “The self-defence teachings are restricted and include more theory than practical exercises. There are several girls who don’t even know the basics of self-defence.”

Another student Simranjeet Kaur said one of her friends had faced sexual harassment on road and she used techniques of self-defence actively.
