Science fiesta at Govt Science College concludes

LUDHIANA: Government College of Science Education and Research, Jagraon, organised a science fiesta sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, to inculcate scientific aptitude among students.

Government College of Science Education and Research, Jagraon, organised a science fiesta sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, to inculcate scientific aptitude among students.

On the inaugural day, quiz, PowerPoint presentation and essay-writing competitions were held at school and college levels. In the quiz competition (schools), the first prize was bagged by the team from Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Jagraon; followed by GTB National Public Senior secondary School, Dakha, and Government Senior Seconday Smart School, Jagraon. The third prize was secured by Government Senior Secondary School, Sidhwan Kalan, and HKS Model Senior Secondary Public School.

In the PowerPoint presentation (schools), the first prize was bagged by students of Sanmati Vimal Jain Senior Secondary Public School Jagraon, followed by the HKS Model Senior Secondary Public School. The third prize was bagged by three schools —GTB National Public Senior Secondary School, Dakha; Government Senior Secondary School, Sidhwan Kalan; and HKS Model Senior Secondary Public School.

In the quiz competition (colleges), the first prize was bagged by SCD Government College. The runners-up were Government Science College, Jagraon, and Government College for Girls, followed by the Khalsa College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd. The Power Point presentations were presented on “Innovation in sciences”, for which the first prize was bagged by the Khalsa College for Women, followed by Government Science College. The third prize was shared by Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College and SCD Government College.

Lecture series, poster presentation, still and working model competitions were conducted on the concluding day of the fiesta.

Prof Gurcharan Singh welcomed the resource persons, Daisy Batish, botany professor at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Felix Blast, professor in plant sciences, Central University, Bathinda. Batish delivered a lecture on “Voyage to Antarctica” and told students about species found in Antarctica and how the region needed to be conserved. Blast delivered a lecture on biodiversity, its status, depletion and conservation.

In the essay-writing competition (schools), Sanmati Vimal Jain School bagged first and second prize while Science College, Jagraon, won at the college level. In a pre-prepared poster presentation, Science College secured first and second position at college level. In the still and working model contest, first, second and third prize was bagged by Government Senior Secondary School, Jagraon; GTB Nation Senior Secondary School, Dakha; and HKS Senior Secondary School, Samalsar, at school level.
