LUDHIANA: Swimmers from Sangrur district stamped their supremacy and secured 139 points to bag the overall team championship in the three-day 41st Abhey Oswal Senior Punjab Swimming and Water-Polo Championship for Men and Women that concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University swimming pool here on Sunday. In the women’s section, Mohali swimmers accumulated 83 points to annex team championship, while Sangrur eves scored 51 points to finish as runners-up. Similarly, in men’s section, Sangrur swimmers collected 84 points to clinch the team championship, whereas hosts Ludhiana, with 43 points, finished at distant second place. In the water-polo (men), Punjab Police came out triumphant and Amritsar secured second position. Jalandhar and Ludhiana districts secured the third and fourth place, respectively. Meanwhile, four meet records were reset on the concluding day. City swimmer, Akashdeep Singh added another record against his name, make it fourth individually. In the 100-metre backstroke event, Akashdeep rewrote the meet record. He clocked 1.03.67 minutes to erase the existing record of 1.06: 02 minutes established in 2006 by Harnimrat Singh of Sangrur. Likewise, in 100-metre freestyle event, Harnimrat Singh of Sangrur improved the previous record. He took 54.23 seconds to create a new meet record. The earlier record of 56.03 second stood in the name of Karan Brar of Faridkot since 2006. Harnimrat Singh established another meet record as he clocked 1.06:34 minutes to put to shade the last record of 1.07:50 minutes set two years ago by Jashandeep Singh of Ropar. In the 4x50-metre freestyle relay (mixed), Sangrur quartet took 1.54:10 minutes to rewrite the new meet record.
