Robbery at Jagraon trader’s house cracked, 5 arrested

LUDHIANA: With the arrest of five members of a robbers’ gang, the Jagraon police have claimed to have cracked a major robbery at the house of a Jagraon-based businessman on Saturday night.

With the arrest of five members of a robbers’ gang, the Jagraon police have claimed to have cracked a major robbery at the house of a Jagraon-based businessman on Saturday night. The robbers looted cash, gold and silver jewellery worth several lakhs and other articles from the house.

The suspects have been identified as Manmohan Singh, alias Mohna, of New Atam Nagar, Jagraon; Parmanand, alias Nandu, of Ram Nagar Mohalla, Jagraon; Ajay Kumar of Dhuman Mohalla, Jagraon; Arjun Kumar Thapa of Sherpur Road, Ludhiana; and Ravi Kumar, alias Babbu, of Kamalpura village, near Jagraon.

Two more persons involved in the robbery are yet to be arrested. They have been identified as Mahanta of Kacha Malak Road, Jagraon, and Dharminder of Ludhiana.

The police have recovered looted items, including Rs 4.7 lakh, 265-gram gold ornaments and 130-gram silver ornaments and two scooters.

The robbers had looted cash, gold and silver jewellery worth several lakhs, and two scooters from the house of Jagraon-based businessman Nachhatar Singh after holding his family captive in the posh Heera Bagh locality.

Jagraon SSP Varinder Singh Brar said the accused were caught when a police team intercepted three persons, namely Manmohan Singh, Parmanand and Ajay Kumar, while they were coming from the Kothe Ath village side on a motorcycle on Monday night. “When the police searched them, they recovered 300-gram heroin hidden beneath the seat of their motorcycle. They were arrested and a case was registered against them under the NDPS Act. During preliminary questioning, the accused confessed their involvement in the robbery incident. The remaining two accused were arrested from separate locations on the basis of information given by the accused arrested earlier,” said Brar.

According to the SSP, all accused are hardened criminals. Manmohan Singh is facing 28 police cases, Parmanand 10 police cases and Arjun Kumar Thapa is facing three police cases.
