Those living near ancient Bhadarkali Mandir are up in arms about a garbage dump in the area.

Annoyed over the failure of the Municipal Council in shifting the garbage dump, a large number of residents today staged a protest against the MC authorities. The protestors raised slogans against the authorities.

Residents have been asking the Municipal Council to shift the garbage dump to some other place for a long time, but to no avail. Several protests have been staged by the area residents in this regard earlier also.

According to residents, they have to face inconvenience due to the dumping of garbage. “Sometimes the garbage dumped here is not lifted for many days, due to which we are troubled. The foul smell of the garbage has made our lives difficult,” lamented Hardev Singh, a protestor.

Residents said apart from the Mandir, there were many other places of religious importance near the place where the garbage is dumped. “We have requested the Municipal Council several times to shift the garbage dump to some other place, but in vain,” said Prashar Dev Sharma, Chairman of the Bhadarkali Mandir Management Trust.

The residents threatened to intensify their struggle if the administration failed to meet their demand.

Jagraon Municipal Council president Satish Kumar Pappu said he was aware of the problems being faced by the area residents due to the dumping of garbage in the area. “We have been searching for another place to shift the garbage dump. As soon as we find a place, the dump will be shifted. Meanwhile, I have instructed the employees to lift the garbage on regular basis from the garbage dump to avoid inconvenience to the residents”, said Pappu.
