Soon after the Municipal Corporation staff shifted the garbage dump under the Gill Chowk flyover to a park near Partap Chowk on Wednesday, the local residents, along with a former councillor, opposed the move.

The MC shifted the dump to a nearby green belt where a tube-well is supposed to be installed.

Former councillor Parminder Singh Soma said they had opposed the dump in the park area. “If a garbage dump is set up in the green belt near Partap Chowk, rats would breed here too. The flyover also passes over Partap Chowk and there are chances that the rats can again cause damage to the flyover. A tube-well is to be sunk at the park but the MC has converted the place into a garbage dump,” he said.

Tejpal Singh, a factory owner, said: “The garbage dump should not be shifted to a green belt as it will inconvenience residents. Instead of setting up a garbage dump there, the MC should develop the park.”

The Health Officer of MC, Dr Vipul Malhotra, said: “As repair work on the Gill Chowk flyover is under way, the dump has been shifted to the nearby park at Partap Chowk. Nobody opposed shifting of the garbage dump.”
