Rain halts paddy purchase process at Khanna

KHANNA: The purchase of paddy was halted at the Asia’s biggest grain market in Khanna following a spell of rain that lashed the area in the morning.

The purchase of paddy was halted at the Asia’s biggest grain market in Khanna following a spell of rain that lashed the area in the morning. It continued intermittently thereafter.

Due to the rain, the arrival of paddy was also hit and the purchase process remained halted till late evening.

Secretary of the Khanna Market Committee, Dalwinder Singh, confirmed that the purchase was halted as the moisture increased with rain.

According to the secretary, a total of 1,90,384 tonnes of paddy was purchased till last evening by different agencies as compared to 1,87,592 tonnes of paddy purchased last year till date.

Out of purchased paddy, a total of 1,77,019 tonne was lifted while 13,365 tonne is left. After the rain stopped, workers of commission agents were trying to dry up heaps of paddy, but immediate purchase was not possible.

President of the Commission Agent’s Association, Rosha Khanna, said the purchase process was hit and it would resume only when the weather clears in a day or two.
