Pashu Palan Mela of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) concluded with a message to develop livestock farming as an effective option of diversification. The fair with a focus on developing livestock professions on modern terms in an environment friendly manner attracted a huge gathering.

GADVASU is contributing in the field of education and research, besides promoting livestock with its extension activities.

To develop livestock, the university is extending its services, support, know how and training to people from all economic categories. Besides delivering services to commercial farmers the varsity is also disseminating information of all techniques to medium and lower category farmers in order to provide equal opportunities to all. It helps them earn benefits with their limited resources.

These views were expressed by the GADVASU Vice Chancellor, Dr AS Nanda. The director of extension education, Dr Harish Kumar Verma, said, “Some of our departments are providing services for rearing livestock. Others are in the field of value addition livestock products. These professions help farmers earn a handsome income. Women can take up these professions comfortably along with their household responsibilities.”

“Young entrepreneur can earn good returns in goat and pig farming,” he added.

The College of Dairy Science and Technology displayed around 33 value added products of milk in the mela. The Department of Livestock Products and Technology displayed around 34 value added products of different types of meat and eggs. The College of Fisheries displayed 14 value added products of fish and meat. All these stalls received a huge response from visitors.

Farmers were enthusiastic about training for the production of milk and meat-related products. Meanwhile, the departments concerned have assured them to provide literature and training on their requirement.

Different booklets were also released in the mela by the GADVASU Vice-Chancellor and officials of the university. Booklet on “How to sustain green fodder for the whole year”, authored by Dr Balwinder Kumar and Navjot Singh Brar, was also released during the mela.
