Ludhiana, January 12

The Municipal Corporation (MC) has appealed to residents to pay their property tax with 10 per cent rebate till January 15. The MC has also decided to keep its offices open for receiving property tax dues on Saturday.

After January 15, the civic body will charge 10 per cent penalty on the property tax. The MC is sending messages to residents on their mobile phones requesting to file old and current property tax dues online or at Suvidha Centres before January 15 without interest and penalty charges, besides availing 10 per cent rebate.

The MC superintendent, Vivek Verma, said, “We appeal to residents to pay property tax and avail 10 per cent rebate on it. After January 15, 10 per cent penalty will be charged on property tax dues.”

“Around 45,000 property tax returns have been filed by the people while the tax of over 90,000 properties is yet to be received by the civic body. Against the target of Rs 100 crore, the MC has collected Rs 50 crore as property tax during the financial period of 2017-18,” he added.

In 2016-17, the MC had collected Rs 66 crore as property tax against the target of Rs 70 crore, he said while adding that notices were also being sent to defaulters, who had not paid tax of previous years.

In October 2017, the Local Bodies Department had issued a notification giving a golden chance to residents, who failed to pay property tax in the past. They were asked to pay only principal amount of the property tax with 10 per cent rebate and that, too, without any penalty or interest till January 15.
