Ludhiana, July 17

A day after students of Government Primary School, Field Ganj, had a narrow escape in the collapse of its dilapidated structure, no student turned up for classes on Tuesday. The teachers of the school have been asked to occupy a place (dharamshala or space in a building) near the school for taking classes.

“We called the District Education Officer in the morning as we weren’t sure where to take classes. No written orders were given to us. Even the students did not come as their parents feared to send them amid rain today. We will ask our peon to send children to the Shahpur Road school from Field Ganj on Wednesday. We have been asked to look for a place near the school. How are we supposed to take responsibility for another place now?” said teachers of the school.

Dimple Madan, Deputy District Education Officer, said: “Keeping in view the safety of students, we will release written orders for the school to be shifted on Shahpur Road. Meanwhile, we have asked them to look for a place near the school. We cannot vacate the land as the other party in the case will occupy it. We will have to negotiate the matter with higher officials as well.”
