Streets of Kanech village, near Sahnewal, are filled with stinking sewage, which gives its roads a filthy look. There is practically no drainage in the village, said residents.
Fed up with the callous attitude of the panchayat in this regard, the villagers have planned to organise a joint protest against the deplorable condition of the village and the casual response of the panchayat in this regard.
The villagers rue that the village panchayat, especially the sarpanch, never paid any heed to their grouse ever. “We have been telling them time and again about the severe problem of water accumulation.
The outlet is completely blocked with foul smelling sewer accumulating near our homes which is creating hurdles for the villagers, shared Satnam singh, a villager.
“The conditions under which the residents of the village are forced to survive are really pitiable. Months have passed, but nobody bothers to improve the sanitary conditions of the place. We are now left with little hope from the panchayat,” the residents complained.
In the absence of any sewerage system, the chances of breakout of any disease loom large. Filthy water and sullage remains jammed in small nullahs, due to which rainwater accumulates. Even a light rain shower is enough to inundate city roads.
The villagers said, “We are utterly deprived of the facilities essential for our sustenance. Its is only due to the poor management of the authorities that we have to live in such miserable conditions.”
Sarpanch of the village Harpeet Kaur, when contacted, said, “There is no problem with the sewerage system. Villagers break nets and dump all sorts of waste into it inviting trouble for themselves. As far as the water drainage is concerned, villagers have themselves raised the entrance of their homes because of which the free flow of water into the drains has been obstructed.”
