Civic issues, as a subject of study, is not a theoretical subject that can be taught to children in school hours. Educating pupils about civic issues is more about cultivating children's interest in civic issues and engaging them in community affairs. Students' experiences and the contextualisation of those experiences are pivotal. The students should know that they have an active role in society - questioning, confirming, collating, thinking, rethinking and most important, participating in community life is what is required.  Learning about civic issues is actually no learning at all, at least in the conventional, textbook sense of learning. It is all about becoming alive as well as responsive to our surroundings. The educational institutions should help the students engage proactively in community affairs. The students should learn that it is important to speak up on issues concerning society. Their voice on civic issues not only matters but also counts. It is an empowering experience. Contributing their bit to the community is not only their right but also their duty.
