German patient makes most of Ayurveda

A multiple sclerosis patient from Germany today shared with mediapersons the story of her treatment through the Ayurvedic system of medicine at a local hospital.

According to Dr Gauhar Vatsyayan, the head of the Ayurveda wing of Deep Hospital here, multiple sclerosis is a debilitating auto-immune disorder, which affects the brain and spinal cord.

In this disease, the immune system attacks one’s own tissues, which leads to various symptoms, such as numbness, headache, improper gait, blurred vision, slurred speech, muscle spasms, fatigue and stress.

There is limited cure for multiple sclerosis in modern medicine where suppressing the immune system is the choice of therapy. Ayurveda, thousands of years earlier, diagnosed this disorder as Sarwang Vaat.

Erica, who has been suffering from multiple sclerosis for five years, flew from Germany to Ludhiana to undergo advanced Ayurveda and Panchkarma procedures.

Her husband was on a technical visit to GS Radiators Limited, who got to know about the treatment.

Dr Gauhar Vatsyayan said Erica was suffering from secondary progressive type of multiple sclerosis.

“Our aim was to reduce the progression and improve her subjective symptoms. We started with our Panchkarma procedures, such as Shahstik Shali Pinda Sweda and Dashmoola Erandadi Basti, which continued for 15 days. After treatment, there was a marked improvement,” he added.

As per Erica, the continuous headache that had been troubling her from two years has completely vanished. Her ambulation index, which checks gait, has greatly improved.

Earlier, she could not walk without her stick for 25 feet but now, she can walk without any problem. Her muscle spasm and numbness have also reduced.

She said she would be back in Ludhiana in October again. Dr Gauhar Vatsyayan said multiple sclerosis was a difficult disease to treat and it takes months before it reflects any changes in the MRI of brain.

Dr Baldeep said Ayurveda had gained immense popularity over the years and Deep Hospital was one the first institutions to have a full-fledged Ayurveda wing.
