National hockey tourney begins today at Doraha

DORAHA: Players from Muscat and all over the country have reached Doraha to participate in National Hockey Tournament that would commence on Sunday at the Guru Nanak Stadium of Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School.

Players from Muscat and all over the country have reached Doraha to participate in National Hockey Tournament that would commence on Sunday at the Guru Nanak Stadium of Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School.

Khanna Senior Superintendent of Police Dhruv Dahiya would be the chief guest for the opening ceremony. This is second time that a Doraha-based rural school has got an opportunity to host this mega event.

“As the Central Board of Secondary Education was convinced by the manner in which the school conducted the week-long event in 2016, they gave us another chance to host the event again,” said, Roopinder Brar, executive administrator, of the school.

“We were more than delighted to know that Guru Nanak Model School is hosting the event again. Earlier, we were provided state-of-the-art of facilities and refreshment. Our every little need was taken care of and we wish that the school hosts the nationals every year,” said players from Daly College, Indore.

School principal DP Thakur said the teams, including Maharaja Swai Mansingh (Rajasthan),OP Jindal School, Raipur(Chhattisgarh) , Indian School Almaabela (Oman) ,SRVM ,Haridwar, Velammal Vidyashram (Chennai) ,ST Paul Rampur (UP) , Dr Amrit Lal Ims Varanasi (UP) Sainik School Assam, Indian School Alseeb (Muscat), Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir (Muscat), Gurukul School, Ghaziabad , Daly College, Indore, Arya Girls Public School, Panipat, have reported in the school.

“All the preparations have been done and the teams are full of vigor. Three grounds have been prepared for the tournament,” said Thakur.

Harpratap Singh Brar, vice- president of the school said, “Such tournaments are not only a unique learning experience for those who join us from outside but also for those who are participating and representing our school. The nature of competition and the manner in which it is conducted is enough to inculcate sporting skills in today’s kids.”

Senior vice president of school managing committee Jogeshwar Singh Mangat, executive administrator Roopinder Kaur Brar, manager Adarshpal Bector, Pavittarpal Singh Pangli, Rajinder Singh Khalsa and Ravinder Singh among others were also present on the occasion.
