Man posing as I-T officer dupes job seekers of lakhs

The police have booked a man and his aide for duping several residents of lakhs on the pretext of arranging a job in the Income Tax Department. The man posed as an inquiry officer of the department. The accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Pinder Sodhi; and Gopi, both residents of Ajit Nagar, Hoshiarpur.

The main complainant, Charanjit Singh, a resident of Mehlov village here, alleged that in October 2017 he, along with his relatives and friends, had gone to the I-T office in Chandigarh to enquire about the I-T exams. He met Gurpreet there who claimed that he looked after work related to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan and he could easily get them inspector-rank jobs in the I-T Department.

The accused said the I-T exam had already been conducted by the department but he could still put their names on the exam list and mingle their answer sheets with those attempted by the candidates during the exam.

The complainant alleged the accused had also taken several lakhs from Rashvir, Charanjit and others promising them that he would clear their names in the waiting list for the post of constable in Punjab Police. He had also taken Rashvir and others to the DGP office where he claimed to have met the senior police official regarding their job.

When he failed to arrange jobs for the complainant and others, they asked him to return the money, but he refused.

Accused nabbed by Ferozepur police

Sources said Gupreet had been arrested by the Ferozepur police and he would be brought here on production warrant by the city police for questioning.
