A man allegedly killed his elder brother following a minor argument at Halwara village on the Mullanpur-Raikot Road last night.

The deceased has been identified as Darshan Singh (45). The incident took place around 10 pm last night. The police have arrested victim’s youngest brother Dalbir Singh for allegedly killing his brother and registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC on the basis of the statement given by victim’s brother Balbir Singh. In his statement, Balbir said they were three brothers and used to live together. Among the three brothers, victim Darshan Singh was the eldest, while the accused Dalbir Singh was the youngest.

Balbir Singh is married, whereas Darshan and Dalbir were unmarried. According to Balbir, all brothers were daily wagers and Darshan and Dalbir used to consume alcohol. “Darshan and Dalbir returned home after drinking last night. After having dinner, Darshan went to his room and took the table fan along. Dalbir went to his room and brought the table fan back to the ‘Vehra’ where he used to sleep,” Balbir said.

He said after this, Darshan and Dalbir started arguing and Dalbir attacked Darshan on the head with a timbre block injuring him. The injury proved fatal for Darshan and he died within a few minutes.

A police team led by DSP Raikot Surjit Singh Dhanoa and SHO Sudhar Ranjit Singh reached the village for investigation. The police took the body under its custody and sent it for post-mortem.

SHO Sudhar Ranjit Singh said the police have handed over the body to his family members after conducting the post-mortem. “We have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against Dalbir Singh and arrested him. Further investigation is on,” he said.
