Ludhiana, September 10

The Division 2 police have booked a man in a case of dowry death. He has been identified as Jagdambe, a native of Uttar Pradesh.

The complainant, Kushma Devi, told the police that about six years ago, her elder daughter Ashu was married to Jagdambe and they gave a motorcycle, gold ornaments and other electronic goods as dowry.

Soon after the marriage, her in-laws started torturing her for not bringing enough dowry and many a time, they would beat her up. Recently when Ashu was beaten by her in-laws, her relatives gathered to talk with her husband.

Jagdambe had felt sorry and promised that he would not thrash his wife in future, alleged Kushma.

On August 30, she got a call from Jagdambe that Ashu had committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan. Later, he cremated her in haste which raised her suspicion and she lodged a police complaint, the complainant said. The suspect is yet to be arrested.

Meanwhile, the Daba police booked a man and his parents in a dowry-death case. They have been identified as Harjinder Singh of Satguru Nagar, his father Jasvir, mother Asha, his brother Soni and sister-in-law Hardeep.

Harjinder has been arrested while the others are at large. The police said on September 9, Amandeep Kaur (29), who was married to Harjinder, died under mysterious circumstances. On a complaint of her parents, the police registered a dowry-death case in this regard.
