A Bareilly (Uttar Pardesh)-based woman has got a dowry harassment case registered against a city-based suspect and his kin.The suspects have been identified Balpreet Singh, husband of the complainant, a resident of Bhagwan Das Colony, Salem Tabri, his mother Paramjit Kaur, and two more New Zealand-based kin.

Complainant Ramanpreet Kaur stated that she got married to the suspect in 2016. Her parents spent more than Rs 9 lakh on the marriage, but her mother-in-law Paramjit Kaur and her kin were not happy with the valuables, gold and gifts given to them in the marriage, the complainant added.

“My in-laws and husband started torturing me physically and mentally. They were demanding Rs 5 lakh as dowry. I was even thrashed when I was pregnant. In 2017, when I gave birth to a girl, my in-laws were not happy as they wanted a boy child. So, they continued to torture me,” added the complainant.

“When I filed a complaint of torture with the Bareilly police, my in-laws managed to strike a compromise. They brought me to Ludhiana, but continued to torture me,” she added.

“Recently, my husband and in-laws tried to strangulate me following which I apprised my parents and a complaint was again lodged with the Bareilly police. A dowry harassment case was registered at the Izatnagar police station,” she added.

Victim’s father Iqbal Singh said they got an FIR registered in Bareilly against the suspects as the latter could have influenced the police through their links had a case been registered in Ludhiana. “We want the police to arrest the suspects immediately and put them behind bars,” he added. — TNS
