The Department of Microbiology and The Society for Advancement of Academics Sports and Cultural Activities (SAASCA), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organised a two lecture series in the auditorium of MS Randhawa Library, PAU. 

The first lecture on “Innovative Approaches in Microbial Science” was delivered by RS Awasthi, Principal, Shivaji Mahavidyalaya Renapur, Maharashtra. He emphasised on the need for conceptualisation of innovation in microbial science and also discussed the risks involved with it. The second lecture on human gut microbiome was delivered by PS Wakte, Head, Department of Microbiology, Dnyanopasak College, Prabhani, Maharashtra. TNS

Session to boost basmati yield

A field day on “Good Agricultural Practices in Basmati Rice” was organised by the School of Organic Farming in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Patiala, at Bhojomajri village, Patiala. Dr PPS Pannu, Additional Director of Research (Natural Resource and Plant Health Management), who was the chief guest, advised the farmers to adopt recommended practices of PAU for higher income. 

CS Aulakh, Director, School of Organic Farming, informed that Biotech Kisan project is in progress in three clusters of Punjab and 150 acres of basmati has been sown during the current season. 

Senior Agronomist SS Walia urged the farmers to adopt integrated farming practices for food self sufficiency. TNS

Training camp for farmers

A total of 55 farmers participated in the monthly training camp of PAU Organic Farmers’ Club organised at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). 

The camp was held under the guidance of Dr JS Mahal, Director of Extension Education. Dr TS Riar, Associate Director (Skill Development), highlighted the importance of organic farming. 

Experts, namely Dr Aman Sidhu, Dr Jupinder Kaur, Dr Ruma Devi and Dr Nirmal Singh shed light on the cultivation of organic crops during rabi season, use of biofertilisers and successful cultivation of vegetables, respectively. A progressive farmer Amarjit Singh Bhangoo shared his experience of organic farming with other farmers. TNS
