Lakshay stuns defending champion Vakul to enter final

Lakshay Sharma (14) stunned defending champion Vakul Sharma in the men’s section on the third day of the Open Ludhiana District Badminton Tournament being held at Shastri Hall near Guru Nanak Stadium here on Saturday.

In the semifinal, Lakshay Sharma edged out Vakul 21-15, 25-23 to enter the final to take on Vishwas Suri who outperformed former state champion Anand Tiwari 21-19, 21-12.

In the women’s section, Prerna Dawar and Arunima Pal won their respective matches to set up the title clash. Prerna beat Trishi Mahajan 21-9, 21-7 and Arunima got the better of Alish Pathania 21-11, 21-11.

Semifinal: Boys’ doubles (U-17): Rajat Budhiraja and Rajveer Khurana beat Aauyush Narang and Vaibhav Gosain 21-13, 21-19; Rajveer S Yadav and Pratham Sood beat Vanshdeep Singh and Vishal Verma 21-18, 21-19.

Boys’ singles (U-17): Aayush Narang beat Rajveer Khurana 21-18, 21-14; Rajat Budhiraja beat Akshit Maithani 21-17, 21-12.

Girls’ singles (U-15): Arunima Pal beat Ishmeet Kaur 21-10, 21-12 and Maitri Mogla beat Ramandeep Kaur 12-21, 21-14, 21-15.

Quarter finals: Men doubles: Mitaksh Gandhi and Lakshay Singla beat Vishal and Pardeep 21-13, 21-18

Sehaj Bhardwaj and Sannidhya Nautiyal beat Anand Tiwari and Lakshay Sharma 21-18, 21-18; Hakam Singh and Rawel Singh beat Rubal Arora and Raghav Aggarwal 21-12, 21-18; Puneetinder Singh and Vakul Sharma beat Sachin Maurya and Gurpreet Singh 21-12, 21-12.

Girls’ singles (U-17): Maitri Mogla beat Siya Trehan 21-2, 21-5; Trishi Singla beat Japleen Kaur 16-21, 21-12, 21-17; Saanvi Nautiyal beat Anupama Sharma 22-20, 21-10; Alish Pathania beat Navleen Kaur 21-10, 21-13.
