Relatives of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar observed hunger strike demanding construction of a direct way to the martyr’s birth place at Mohalla Naughara from Chaura Bazar.

Following the ‘hawan’, All-India Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust president Ashok Thapar and general secretary Sandeep Thapar sat on a hunger strike. After getting assurance from Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu that the civic body would look into their demand, the members ended their strike.

Ashok Thapar said: “There is a need to acquire 40 sq yard encroached land for the same. In the absence of any direct way from Chaura Bazar, visitors face inconvenience to reach the martyr’s birth place. The government should take requisite measures at the earliest.”

“Earlier, we had given a 10-day ultimatum to the Deputy Commissioner to take required action. We had got the signature of area residents and shopkeepers on the memorandum for the construction of a direct way. But nothing has been done till date. Thus, we observed a hunger strike,” he said.

The Trust members said Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on August 15, 2018, announced Rs1 crore for the development of the martyr’s birth place.

Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu visited Mohalla Naughara to pay tributes to the martyr. He said: “I assured the kin of the martyr that the civic body will study the case. If any encroachment is found, we will take requisite action.”

Earlier, “Shradhanjali Samagam” was organised on the occasion of martyrdom day of Sukhdev Thapar. A number of people paid tributes to the martyr.
