Ludhiana, July 23

Alleging police inaction in the July 5 accident case in which a bike-borne man died, the kin of the deceased blocked the Gill Canal Bridge Road today.

The protest which lasted for half an hour created huge traffic mess on the road. Deceased’s kin were demanding immediate arrest of the accused. They alleged they had been taking rounds of the Daba police station, but the police officials were making hollow promises only.

It was only after the police assured the protesters that the accused car driver would be nabbed soon that they lifted their dharna.

Paramjit Singh, brother of the deceased Avtar Singh, of Shimlapuri said on July 5, he and his brother Avtar were heading home on their motorcycle, when a speedy and rashly-driven car (Tata Safari) came from Ludhiana side and rammed into their motorcycle near Lohara Bridge.

He said his brother sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. The accused driver, however, managed to flee.

SHO Daba Gurvinder Singh, who reached the spot, told the protesters that the police would arrest the accused soon.

Sources said the police have recovered the vehicle number on the basis of which raids were on to trace the accused.
