Ludhiana, June 11

We are accustomed to the noise pollution level oblivious of the harms it can do to us. Believe it or not, but noise pollution has given us ailments like hearing impairment, sleep disturbance, aggressive behaviour, constant stress, headaches and hypertension.

“Loud music, television, people talking on their phones, usin horns in traffic (honking) and even pets barking in the middle of the night have become a part of the urban culture. But all these factors tend to disrupt the natural rhythm of our life,” say medical practitioners.

“Constant exposure to loud levels of noise can damage ear drums and cause hearing loss. Loud noise can certainly hamper sleeping pattern and may lead to irritation and uncomfortable situations,” cautioned experts.

“Blood pressure level, cardio-vascular disease and stress-related heart problems are on the rise. Studies suggest that high intensity noise causes high BP and increases heart beat rate as it disrupts the normal flow of blood,” they opined.

“As compared to rural population, urbanites are more exposed to the noise pollution. The environment these days is such that it is difficult to escape from sounds/noise,” said Dr GS Grewal, a city-based physician.

“Even electrical appliances at home give a constant hum or beeping sound. By and large, lack of urban planning has increased the exposure to unwanted sounds,” he added.

Causes of noise pollution

Rapid industrialisation: Most factories in the industrial capital of Punjab produce high decibel noise. Besides, noise from generators, compressors and exhaust fans adds to pollution.

Social/religious functions: The noise produced during social and religious functions also causes pollution. Blaring loudspeakers and high-volume music disrupts the peaceful environment.

Continuous honking: The increase in modes of transportation and continuous honking has further aggravated the problem. Such sounds cause serious health-related issues, including high blood pressure (BP) and headaches.

Construction activity: Further, construction activities around us produce loud noise, which disturbs and makes lives of the people living in the vicinity miserable.

Modern gadgets: The noise produced by gadgets used in homes, including TV, mobile, mixer grinder, pressure cooker, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, cooler and air-conditioners also causes noise pollution, but it is mild and can be controlled easily.
