Hospitals see spike in heatstroke cases

LUDHIANA: As heatwave conditions continue to prevail in the city, hospitals are receiving an increased number of patients affected by heat.

As heatwave conditions continue to prevail in the city, hospitals are receiving an increased number of patients affected by heat.

The Civil Hospital is receiving 4-5 cases of heatstroke daily. Dr Avinash Jindal, medical specialist at the hospital, said they had started receiving cases of heat illnesses. “People should stay hydrated. Lemon water mixed with sugar and salt is a perfect solution to the problem. In addition to this, people should avoid going out during afternoon. It is preferable to go out during early morning hours or after 6 pm. In case, one has to go out during day then it is advisable to carry an umbrella or a wet towel,” Jindal said.

Dr Sandeep Sharma, Medical Superintendent of the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, said as the temperature had started rising, the chances of heat-related illness would also increase.

Another medicine specialist from the city, Dr Tarun Makhija, said elderly and children were most affected by continuous heatwave. “I have started receiving 5-6 patients daily who are affected with intense heat. Children should not be taken out during afternoon hours. The best remedy is to stay inside and drink lot of water,” he said.

Tips to tackle scorching heat

Drink enough water, have lemon water, coconut water, fruit juice in plenty. Avoid eating already cut fruits from outside. Avoid going out when sun is at its peak. Cover your head when you step out. Wear light-coloured cotton clothes.
