Hockey festival off to a colourful start

The ninth Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Festival being organised by Mata Sahib Kaur Charitable and Sports Trust got off to a colourful start at Jarkhar village on Ludhiana-Malerkotla Road near here yesterday.

Hockey Olympian Gurbaj Singh declared the festival open by hitting the ball into the goal post. Baba Bhupinder Singh Bhida and Jathedar Pritpal Singh Palli cut the ceremonial ribbon to mark the opening of the competition.

In the matches played on day one, in the senior section, Neeta Club of Rampur outclassed Young Club of Otala 11-10 through tie breaker and Grewal Club of Kila Raipur beat Akalgarh XI 8-7.

In the sub-junior category, Baghria Centre of Sangrur drubbed Kila Raipur Warriors 10-1 and Hockey Training Centre of Rampur overpowered Nankana Sahib Public School, Amargarh 3-2. — OC
