Ludhiana, December 1

Nearly 50 per cent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients are found to be in the age group of 15-20 years. Parents and peer educators can play a pivotal role in creating awareness among youngsters.

“A majority of patients testing positive for AIDS are in the age group of 15-20 years. Educational seminars should be conducted to spread awareness among students,” said Dr US Sooch, project officer, AIDS Control.

“Ludhiana district has 1.5 per cent HIV positive patients compared to 2.5 per cent in the state. With the dissemination of knowledge about the disease, the number of patients coming in for tests has increased over the years,” he added.

“Street plays, seminars and forming red ribbon clubs at schools are needed,” said Dr Gurpreet Singh.
