The green lungs of the city are shrinking and pollution level is increasing. However, the Government College for Girls (GCG) is doing its bit to keep the greenery intact and help in increasing the green cover.

College Principal Mohinder Kaur is technically and emotionally attached to the environment because she herself had been a botany professor and is now putting every effort to make the college ‘go green’.

The college has been organising Vanmahotsva annually. Today, as many as 150 samplings were planted on the college premises. MP Ravneet Bittu and MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu were present on the occasion and planted saplings on the campus.

The college has also formed two environment related groups named as Swachh College Society, which has 50 students as its members, and Environment Society, which has 100 students as its members. The students take care of these plants and also encourage other students on the campus to plant trees.

“We encourage the students to plant more and more trees and if no space is available, we encourage them to plant saplings in pots. Members of these two groups also educate the students to keep the campus clean. I have seen a sea change in the behaviour of students, and now they behave more responsibly and do not litter around on the campus,” said Manju Sahni, HoD, Botany.

“Today, many cases of dengue and chikungunya are coming up. However, if we plant ‘Tulsi’ in our homes, mosquitoes will never enter the place. Plants are our best friends as they give us oxygen. Many plants have medicinal properties and these also beautify our surroundings and ease our stress,” says Mohinder.
