The police have booked four persons for allegedly duping a man of Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad. The accused have been identified as Harpreet Singh of New Vijay Nagar, his wife, a woman of Guru Amardas Nagar and Lovely Rana of New Vijay Nagar. They are yet to be arrested.

The police have registered a case against them under sections 420, 406 and 120 B of the IPC; 10, 24 of the Immigration Act; and Section 13 of the Human Smuggling Act at the Division Number 5 station. In his complaint to the police, the victim, Amarjit Singh of Karnana village in Nawanshahr district, told the police that he wanted to move abroad for better future.

“A few months ago, I came in contact with the accused through one of my friends. The accused told me that they have good relations in Canada and they can arrange a work permit of Canada for me. In lieu of sending me to Canada on work permit, they demanded Rs 5 lakh. I gave them Rs 1 lakh in cash and cheques for Rs 4 lakh,” the victim said.

According to victim, the accused failed to send him abroad for many months. “When I asked them to return my money if they are not able to send me to Canada, they refused,” said Amarjit Singh.

Meanwhile, investigating officer Harbans Singh, SI, said the police had registered a case against four persons and further investigation was on. “All accused have absconded. The police have been conducting raids to arrest them,” he said.
