Lauding the Supreme Court (SC) for forming SIT to investigate the 186 cases of the 1984 riots, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, HS Phoolka, termed the decision a historic step. He said, “Now, it will open up a new chapter of justice for the riot-affected families.”

“Although, the Supreme Court has been issuing frequent orders in Gujarat riots, the judiciary has for the first time shown such seriousness in the anti-Sikh riots. Now, this has come up as a current issue. Besides, it has also given a message that the law will catch up with those involved in the crime even after 33 years,” he added.

“With the start of fresh investigation in the 186 cases, which were closed by investigation agencies earlier, now, leaders of the Congress will face the consequences. Apart from Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler, now Kamal Nath will also face the outcome,” said Phoolka.

“With the formation of fresh SIT, now I realise that my decision to shun the Cabinet rank, when I was leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, was right as I stood for the riot victims’ families,” he added.

“With the opening of fresh chapter, we will work hard to ensure that culprits be punished. Decision will also serve as deterrent to the mob frenzy and politically motivated riots in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, Phoolka refused to comment on four top SC judges, who had criticised the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Dipak Misra. “I cannot comment on the issue as I am fighting cases of the 1984 riots. It may affect the ongoing investigation. I will just say that I am thankful to the CJI, Dipak Misra, who has shown keen interest in the 1984 riots,” said Phoolka.
