A number of Congress workers of the area led by former minister Tej Parkash Singh Kotli protested against the rising prices of diesel and petrol at the Lalheri Chowk here on Thursday.

Workers raised slogans against the Centre government and also burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to control the prices of petrol and diesel.

While addressing party activists on the occasion Kotli alleged that the Modi government had failed to solve any problem of the common people. The prices of diesel and petrol had sky rocketed and created problems for the people, he added.

The tall claims of the BJP-leg Centre government had fallen flat and there was hue and cry everywhere due to rise in prices of all commodities, mainly fuel.

The Khanna Municipal Council president, Vikas Mehta, asked the Centre to recount any single work done in favour of the people. “We are trying our best for the development of the town. Tenders have been floated for laying sewerage and carrying out other development works, which are expected to start in the coming few days,” he added.

“Captain Amaridner Singh-led Punjab government is committed for the welfare of the people in the state,” he said.

Tej Parkash and other leaders demanded roll back of fuel prices without any delay. “Protests will continue if our demand is not conceded immediately,” they said.

The area legislator (MLA), Gurkirat Singh Kotli, did not take part in the protest as he has gone abroad. His father Tek Parkash Kotli led party workers during the protest. A number of Congress leaders form the area were also present during the protest.
