Members of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union today took out a candle march in protest against the suspension of five teachers of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town. Slogans were also raised against the college authorities.

Earlier, the teachers of the union, belonging to different colleges, had worn black badges to work on Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against the attitude of the principal and management of GNG College. The union is protesting against the suspension of five college teachers and issuance of termination notices to nine teachers.

“The attitude of college authorities towards the teachers is not good and we are protesting against the same for their dictatorial attitude. College authorities are suspending teachers, scrapping courses and issuing termination notices. We also demand inquiry against setting up of a hospital on the college campus. We doubt that the college funds are being diverted towards the hospital,” said Prof Kuldeep Batta, district president of the union.

The union had given time to the college management till Wednesday to take back the termination letters and since they have failed to do so, the union took out a candle march. On Friday and Saturday, the teachers of the district will observe a strike for two periods.

Ishwarjot Cheema, secretary of Guru Nanak Educational Trust which runs the college, said the college had suspended tecahers with a definite reason behind it. “We will be issuing a chargesheet. Let the inquiry committee conduct an inquiry and submit the report. Action will be taken after that. I don’t want to talk regarding the reason behind the suspension of the teachers as it might influence the committee. I want the inquiry committee to conduct the inquiry in an impartial manner and submit the report. We have only suspended the teachers and rusticated them. In addition to this, I want to clear that salary of no teacher has been deducted or withheld by the college.”
