The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has decided to encourage residents to adopt stray dogs in the city. The civic body is also planning to hold an open discussion on creating shelters for stray dogs.

According to information, Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital record around 500 stray dog bite cases in a month. As many as 7,619 such cases were reported in the hospital between January 2018 and March 2019. MC Commissioner Kanwalpreet Kaur Brar said they were organising a discussion on creating dog shelters. They would help and urge the city residents to adopt stray dogs. She has invited all dog lovers of the city to take part in the open discussion to be held at MC Zone D, Sarabha Nagar, on June 12 at 5.30pm.

A number of stray dog cases were reported in the city in the recent past, following which some activists had also complained to the Punjab State Human Rights Commission, alleging that the civic body had failed to take any required measures.

MC’s Senior Veterinary Officer Dr YP Singh said people would be motivated to adopt stray dogs so that dog bite cases could be reduced. People would be requested to come forward to help in creating shelters for stray dogs and feed them, he said.

“If stray dogs are adopted, they will get a home. There is also a plan to keep stray dogs after screening and training for defence purpose on a trial basis at some places,” said Dr Kirti Dua, professor at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.
