Ludhiana, July 11

The United Nations’ Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) took a delegation of the bicycle industry in Ludhiana to China recently. China ranks number one in manufacturing bicycles in the world.

Avtar Singh Bhogal and Pradeep Wadhawan — the two members from the United Cycle Parts Manufacturers’ Association (UCPMA) stayed in China for about five days.

They said if the technology was brought to India, the productivity would be enhanced and the bicycle industry would get a boost.

Talking to The Tribune, Avtar Singh Bhogal of Bhoga Sons said it was a beneficial tour as far as bicycle industry was concerned.

“The coming trend is of aluminium and carbon cycles, but there is a need to study the in depth technology used in manufacturing light-weight bicycles. UNIDO had sponsored the tour and took us to various research and development centres. It was a nice exposure and we learnt a lot about their latest technology,” said Bhogal.

The UCPMA is hopeful that UNIDO will provide aid for boosting bicycle industry here. “UNIDO is a famous organisation, which also provides aid. If the aid is given to us, we will benefit by bringing in latest technology in manufacturing light-weight bicycles. Further, we can sign MoUs with China for collaboration,” said Bhogal. — TNS
