Ludhiana; The Ludhiana District Chess Association (LDCA) will hold the first edition of the FIDE Rated Punjab State (U-19) Chess Championship at CT University from October 20 to 22. According to Arvinder Preet Singh, general secretary, LDCA, the event is being organised for the first time to provide junior players with an opportunity to showcase their skills. Top four position holder girls and boys will be selected during the championship to represent Punjab in the National Junior Chess Tournament slated to be held in November last week in New Delhi. Players born on or after January 1, 1999, are eligible to participate in the championship. Details regarding the entry fee and boarding and lodging for outstation players are available on the official website www.punjabchess.com. Women Congress protest

Ludhiana: The Mahila Congress, under the leadership of Leena Tapariya, protested against rising prices of goods and services here on Wednesday. “The prices of cooking gas have doubled in the last four years and price of every essential commodity has gone up,” she said. The protest march started from Guru Arjun Dev Nagar and passed through various areas of the city. They blamed the BJP government for inflation. Tapariya said: “When Narendra Modi-led BJP government came into power, the price of cooking gas was Rs425 while now it has reached Rs925. The prices of petrol and diesel have also sky rocketed.”

Man booked for dowry death

The police have booked four persons in a dowry death case. The deceased has been identified as Sandeep Kaur (28). The accused are Lakhwinder Singh, his father Gurdev Singh, his sister Rimpy and one Mandeep Kaur, all residents of New Ashok Nagar. TNS
