A jail inmate was found dead in the bathroom of Central Jail here. The incident came to light on Wednesday night.

Jail Superintendent Shamsher Singh said the deceased, identified as Livtar Singh (26) of Shimlapuri, had been lodged in the jail since March 3 in a theft case.

Around 9 pm last night when the jail staff were taking a count of the inmates, they noticed that one of them was missing. They started searching for him and finally, found Livtar dead in the bathroom. “A string was found tied around his neck, and it could be possible that he committed suicide. A judicial inquiry has been ordered into the matter,” Shamsher added.

A panel of three doctors conducted a post-mortem examination of the body.

Meanwhile, members of the deceased’s family alleged that Livtar was murdered inside the jail.
