Anand Isher Public Senior Secondary School, Chhapar, has launched a movement to sensitise residents to preservation of environment.

Besides organising an elaborate function to spread awareness about causes and consequences of reckless felling of trees through skits, mimes and lectures, the organisers planted saplings of fruiting and shade trees on premises of the school and various organisations.

Ludhiana Sessions Judge Gurvir Singh presided over the inaugural session and Jagraon ADC Neeru Katyal Gupta was the chief guest. SP (H) Ludhiana Rural Jasminder Singh chaired the concluding session.

Convener of the project and former president of the Ludhiana District Bar Parupkar Singh Ghuman said over around 1,500 saplings of fruit and shade trees would be planted by the constituents of the school and volunteers of the Smart Citizens of Ludhiana during the campaign that was kicked off on the school premises on Friday.

“Now when everybody is worried about the fast deteriorating environment, we must follow the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev who taught us that no life was possible without plants as the oxygen which we breathe in is generated by plants through the process of photosynthesis,” said Singh.

Highlighting salient features of the flagship project launched by the Punjab Government led by Capt Amarinder Singh, Dr Neeru Katyal Gupta said over 2 lakh saplings of various species of plants had already been planted in localities falling under Ludhiana district. “While pits for planting 3,68,627 saplings of plants have been dug in localities falling under 13 blocks of Ludhiana, we have already completed plantation of 2,02,702 saplings,” said Gupta.
