A soldier of the Indian Army from Buraj Hari Singh village in Ludhiana district was killed in an accident while he was performing duty in the Sikkim hills today.

The martyr has been identified as Naik Buta Singh (35), posted in artillery regiment 66 Surveillance And Target Acquisition (SATA) Battery in Guajrat. He is survived by his wife, nine-year-old daughter and elderly parents.

The GOG group coordinator, Subedar Bhag Singh, said Buta Singh was deployed in Sikkim as a volunteer by his parent regiment recently. Though the exact sequence of events leading to his death are yet to be ascertained, the villagers said he was buried under snow.

Though Buta Singh’s family lived in Gujarat, his body would be brought to his native village early in the morning tomorrow.

Raikot Block Development Officer Navneet Joshi said the jawan’s cremation would take place at the village crematorium with state honors.
