During investigation, it came to light that deceased Avtar Singh had an affair with his classmate, who was the sister of the main accused Jaspreet Singh. On Friday, after attending the Dasehra celebrations in Doraha, Avtar was on his way back home with his siblings, when he received a call from Jaspreet, who asked him to meet him alone to attend a singing show, which was going to be held in Doraha where famous singers were to perform. Avtar agreed and when he reached the meeting spot, Jaspreet along with Inderpal Singh (relative) and Gurpal Singh (friend), all in their mid 20s, attacked him with razor sharp objects. They then left him to die near the railway lines at Malipur village. The villagers who found Avtar, admitted him to Sidhu Hospital, Doraha, but due to his deep wounds, the doctors referred him to DMCH, Ludhiana, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The SSP said a police team led by SP(I) Jasvir Singh solved the murder case within 24 hours and booked the accused under Section 302/34 of the IPC at Doraha police station. The SSP said the police got a tip-off from social media to identify the reason behind this incident and to arrest the accused.
