Ludhiana, April 20

The members of the Environmental and Welfare Association, New Janta Nagar and Shimlapuri, Ludhiana, has asked the Municipal Corporation to pay attention towards issues such as encroachments, among others, on the Gill Road.

The encroachments by shopkeepers, old bikes and scooter sellers and others have been causing ‘traffic snarls’ on Gill Road, they said.

President of the association, Sher Singh said he had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against encroachments. “On the directions of the court, the encroachments in the shape of kiosks opposite the PSPCL office and ITI College were removed. Besides, encroachments from the market of old scooters, slopes and sun shades outside the shops were removed,” he said.

In his complaint sent to MC Commissioner and Mayor, he said the encroachments were being raised again on the Gill Road, but no action was being taken. He alleged that the encroachments near the PSPCL office were coming up again.

“Several banks and hospitals on Gill Road failed to provide any parking space for visitors. Thus, the parking of cars and scooters is made on encroached portion of the road. The civic body authorities should check encroachments and take necessary action against these,” he said.

“The authorities had earlier assured to construct footpaths on Gill Road, but nothing has been done. The authorities should also provide space for street vendors so that they don’t encroach upon the road portion to run their business,” Singh said.

“A plot has become a dumping ground, emanating foul smell and creating nuisance. The MC must ask property owner to create a wall to stop people from dumping garbage. Besides, the officials concerned have failed to pay attention towards open manhole covers at New Janta Nagar. The MC must install speed breaker in street 7 of New Janata Nagar to avoid any mishap. The streets should be cleaned properly,” he said.
