The Police Department has appointed a woman as Ahmedgarh Sadar SHO, a first in rural localities of this subdivision.

Besides boosting the morale of working women, girls and the domestic help, the move is expected to facilitate decorum in public places as also police stations and chowkis of the region.

Terming her appointment as a routine job, Amandeep Kaur, first SHO of Sadar police station, said: “Like any other designated officer, I have a vital responsibility on my shoulders which can be fulfilled only with the cooperation of peace-loving and law-abiding citizens, and guidance of my seniors in the department. I feel I have to set a good example for my successors, may be women or men. I also understand that all members of my staff will feel motivated.”

Amandeep said she had advised all beat officers to organise meetings with the office-bearers and activists of various social and religious organisations of their respective areas. “But at the same time, I wish to make sure that I am easily accessible to all seeking justice from beats that fall under my jurisdiction,” she said.

As an SHO, Amandeep would be responsible for maintaining law and order at more than 50 villages and rural localities. The geographical location of the area under her jurisdiction is quite difficult to look after as it is surrounded by localities that fall under Ludhiana Commissionerate, Ludhiana (Rural) and Khanna police districts besides Sangrur police district.

Enhanced surveillance and social policing by involving local volunteers are major elements of her strategy to check crime against women and children besides curbing drug addiction and thefts.
