640 cases of illicit liquor seized

The Excise and Taxation Department has seized 640 cases of English and countrymade liquor from two trucks here. An official said they had got information about the smuggling of liquor from the Head Office in Chandigarh.

A team comprising inspectors Varinder Kumar, Gopal, Karamjit Singh, Inderpal and Saurabh reached near Sherpur Chowk where a few trucks were parked around 8:30 pm. Two of these trucks had stocks of illicit liquor which was meant for sale in Chandigarh and Haryana. The drivers had fled the scene before the team reached the spot.

An FIR has been lodged with the police. “A huge quantity of smuggled liquor is seized in the district these days. The liquor, which is not meant for sale in Punjab, is brought here and sold at cheap rates. The smuggling causes loss of revenue to the department,” said one of the inspectors.
