3 held with 39 cases of illicit liquor, heroin

The police have nabbed three smugglers and recovered a huge quantity of illicit liquor and drugs in separate cases. The ACP (Crime), Maninder Bedi, in a statement issued here today, said the police had got a tip-off on these smugglers.

A naka was set up on the GT Road near Tiger Safari by the anti-narcotics team. Jagtar Singh (33), a resident of Basti Jodhewal, was signalled to stop. A search of his car yielded 15 cases of illicit liquor. During preliminary questioning, he told the police that he was working as driver. He took to drug smuggling to earn money in a short span of time. He had been smuggling liquor for the past six months. Jagtar received liquor from wine shops of the nearby districts and sold it in retail to his clients in Ludhiana.

In another case, the police signalled an Innova driver to stop for checking at a naka on the GT Road near Kadian village. The police recovered 26 cases of illicit liquor from the vehicle and nabbed its driver Gurdeep Singh (26), a resident of Basti Jodhewal. He told the police that he had been smuggling liquor for the past three months.

In yet another case, the police set up a naka near Civil Hospital. They searched a pedestrian and found 20 gram of heroin in his belongings. He was identified as Sandeep Verma (38), a resident of Ludhiana. During preliminary questioning, he told the police he owned a photography studio near Dukhnivaran Sahib Gurdwara. When he found it was not a profitable business, he ventured into drug peddling.

Man gets jail for carrying charas

Additional Sessions Judge Dilbagh Singh Johal has convicted Sanjay (30) hailing from Maharashtra on the charges of illegally possessing charas. He was sentenced to imprisonment for three years. Sanjay was found in possession of 650-gram charas at Dhandari Kalan village on November 28, 2014. OC
