Panic gripped Abdulapur Basti here when two groups clashed and exchanged fire this evening. Two persons from one of the groups suffered bullet injuries and were admitted to the DMCH. Their condition was stated to be critical.

The injured have been identified as Manjit Singh of Azad Nagar and Gurcharan Singh of Gurunanak Nagar. Manjit suffered a bullet injury in the stomach and Gurcharan was hit in the foot.

Johny, a friend of the injured, said an old enmity was the reason behind the attack. He said more than 24 persons attacked them when he, along with his friends, was standing outside the house of their friend Sanjiv Arora around 10 PM.  The assailants were carrying revolvers, pistols and sharp weapons.

"We were cornered by the assailants. They fled the scene when we started pelting them with stones. The assailants had exchanged heated arguments with us yesterday and threatened us with dire consequences," said Johny.

ACP Sartaj, who along with Model Town SHO, reached the spot, said the police were yet to record the statement of the injured and efforts were on to nab the assailants.

The police said raids were being conducted at the hideouts of the assailants and they would be nabbed soon.

Source said both groups belong to the same area. The assailants had fired more than 24 gunshots but fortunately only two persons suffered bullet injuries.
