A boy aged 12-13 years allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at his residence near Chandni Chowk, Salem Tabri, on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Pritpal, alias Paras Malhotra. He was a student of eighth standard in GMT School located near Jalandhar Bypass. His father, Sukhwinder Singh Malhotra, is a commission agent at vegetable market. Paras was the only son of his parents.

Paras returned from school around 3 pm. He entered his room and hanged himself. When his mother entered the room to call him for lunch, she found Paras hanging from the ceiling fan. He was taken to the hospital where the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Sources said the boy’s parents had recently bought a new mobile phone to Paras but he was yet to get a Sim card. When he returned from school on Wednesday, he asked his mother for a Sim card. When his mother asked him to change and have lunch first, he got angry and went into his room. He reportedly hanged himself with a dupatta of his mother.

The Salem Tabri SHO, Inspector Vijay Kumar, said the police were investigating the cause of boy’s death. Suspecting no foul play, inquest proceedings under Section 174, CrPC, have been initiated, he said.

Principal of the school Jasbir Bal said the boy attended the school in routine. “I even talked to the bus driver in which the boy went home. He said the boy was quite normal and he even interacted with him in the bus,” the principal added.
