Ludhiana: Additional Sessions Judge Sonia Kinra has convicted Vikas Yadav of New Jandiali of sexually exploiting a minor girl (13) of his landlord. He has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years. A fine of Rs 1.3 lakh has also been imposed on him. Of the amount, Rs 1 lakh would be paid to the victim. The case was registered at the Sahnewal police station in 2015 on a statement of the victim’s mother. She had caught the accused, who lived in the same vehra as her, raping her minor daughter. OC

Food samples collected

Ludhiana:  A team on Thursday collected 11 food samples from Radhe Radhe, Chirag Food and Card Factory located at Upkar Nagar. The food items, including ‘Mango Bite’, ‘Chana Bite’, raisin, paneer, mint sauce, paneer, chana, moong dal dhuli, mango shake, milk and green tea, were collected by the team headed by District Health Officer Andesh Kang. The team also inspected a sweets manufacturing unit and destroyed all expired colours and flavours. The team also destroyed sweets having colour content which is not allowed as per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. TNS

PCPNDT panel meeting

Ludhiana: During a meeting held on Thursday, members of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Committee discussed the initiatives taken by the department to check female foeticide. Civil Surgeon Parvinder Pal Singh Sidhu  said 10 ultra sound centres had been served show-cause notices while the licences of two had been suspended by the department. “Any violation by any centre is not going to be spared and strict action will be taken against the violators.” he said. Mobile shop burgled

Ludhiana: A mobile showroom was burgled on Tajpur Road from where thieves decamped with 13 mobile phones, Rs 4,000 and other valuables. Shop owner Anil Kumar said on February20, when he came to open the shop, he was shocked to see the broken locks and the shop ransacked. The police said CCTV footage was being checked to identify the accused. TNS

Woman alleges inaction by cops 

Khanna: Sukhjit Kaur, a resident of Ghaloti village, has alleged inaction by the Khanna police regarding her complaint on harassment by her in laws. Sukhjit stated that despite visiting the DSP numerous times no action has been taken against her in laws and she was being pressurised to take divorce instead. In her complaint to Khanna SSP Dhruv Dahiya, Sukhjit said she got married to Daljit Singh Pandher, an NRI in April 2018. She added that after marriage she came to know that her husband was a drug addict. Sukhjit alleged that after marriage her husband, father-in-law and some of their relatives started harassing her and also beat her up. She said she got her husband admitted to the Ludhiana Civil Hospital at drug de-addiction centre for treatment but her in laws got him discharged and kept him at an undisclosed place. The SSP said it was a matrimonial case and he has again marked an inquiry to the SP (H). OC

Travel agent booked for fraud

Ludhiana: The Saraba Nagar police have booked a travel agent on the charge of duping a resident of Rs 75,000 on the pretext of arranging a trip to Goa. The accused has been identified as Shiv Shankar, a resident of Bihar. Complainant Prof Rupinderjit Singh of Housing Board Colony, Ludhiana, alleged that the accused agent, after taking money, failed to arrange any trip and now, was refusing to return the money. The police said a case of fraud has been registered and raids would be conducted in Bihar to nab the accused. TNS

Man held for theft at factory

Ludhiana: The Koom Kalan police nabbed a man on the charge of stealing engine parts from BSA Industries India Unit at Raiya village. Gurjeet Singh, manager at the factory, said the factory deals in manufacturing diesel engines. On January 30, when he opened the factory, engine parts were found missing. Later, when CCTV footage was checked, Harpreet Singh alias Nanna, a resident of Machhiwara, who is also a contractor in the factory, was seen stealing the engine parts. A case of theft has been registered against the accused. TNS

One booked in Dowry case 

Ludhiana: The women’s cell has registered a dowry harassment case against a man. The accused has been identified as Harminder Singh of Raipur. Complainant Jasvir Kaur of Ishar Nagar stated to the police that she got married to the accused in 2017. After marriage, she was subjected to mental and physical torture for the want of dowry, she added. The police said a case of dowry harassment has been registered against the accused, who is at large.
